    Cochrane and subsequent meta-analyses of randomized trials (over a dozen small RCTs, typically 6–24 weeks) find no significant benefit of omega-3 supplementation for core autism symptoms — social interaction, communication, or repetitive behavior. A few trials reported modest improvement in hyperactivity and stereotypy subscales, but effects are inconsistent across studies and susceptible to publication bias. Observational data showing lower omega-3 status in ASD plausibly reflect selective eating rather than causation. The balanced position: supplementation is safe, reasonable where diet lacks fish, and justifiable for general health — but it should never displace behavioral intervention, and parents should be wary of protocols bundling it with unproven biomedical treatments.
