- Evidence is insufficient. Shift work adaptation is a circadian problem, and the interventions with evidence are timed bright light, strategically timed melatonin, planned napping and deliberate caffeine use during the shift - with prescribed wakefulness-promoting agents for diagnosed shift work disorder. Magnesium has no chronobiotic activity, meaning it cannot shift the timing of the body clock, and no trial has studied it in shift workers. What magnesium does have is modest evidence for sleep quality and anxiety in people with low magnesium status, which might marginally ease daytime sleep, though this has not been tested in a misaligned circadian phase - the hardest part of shift work is that daytime sleep occurs when the clock is signalling wake, which magnesium does not change.
