- Evidence is insufficient. The claim traces to a single small study in which magnesium supplementation at 10 mg/kg/day for four weeks was associated with increased free and total testosterone in sedentary men and taekwondo athletes, combined with in vitro work suggesting magnesium may reduce the binding affinity of sex hormone binding globulin for testosterone, thereby increasing the free fraction. That in vitro finding has not been confirmed as a clinically relevant effect in humans, and no trial has measured SHBG concentration as a primary outcome of magnesium supplementation. SHBG is principally regulated by insulin, thyroid hormone, oestrogen, liver function and body fat - insulin resistance lowers it and thyrotoxicosis raises it - none of which magnesium addresses directly.
