    Worth attention if your intake is poor or you take diuretics or PPIs. A small lever, not a treatment.

    How It Works

    Magnesium is a cofactor for the tyrosine kinase activity of the insulin receptor and for enzymes in glucose phosphorylation. Low intracellular magnesium impairs insulin signalling, and hyperglycaemia itself increases urinary magnesium loss, creating a reinforcing loop.

    Evidence

    What the studies say

    Prospective cohort studies consistently show an inverse association between magnesium intake and incident type 2 diabetes, with roughly a 15% risk reduction per 100mg daily increment. Randomised trials of supplementation show modest improvements in fasting glucose and HOMA-IR, concentrated in participants who were magnesium deficient or insulin resistant at baseline. Trials in replete participants find little. The gap between strong observational and modest interventional data is the reason for a mixed verdict.

    Safety

    Caveats

    Diarrhoea with citrate and oxide forms. Avoid in advanced chronic kidney disease. Serum magnesium is a poor reflection of tissue stores, so a normal result does not exclude depletion.

    Less likely to help if

    People with good dietary magnesium intake from nuts, legumes and greens.
