    Strong neuroinflammation mechanism, real interest in mast-cell-driven brain fog, but the human trials are tiny and used combination formulas.

    How It Works

    Luteolin inhibits mast cell degranulation, reducing release of histamine, tryptase and IL-6 that can act on the brain, and it suppresses microglial activation and NF-kB-driven cytokine production. Since mast-cell and microglial signalling are the leading candidate mechanisms for inflammation-associated cognitive fogginess, the pharmacology maps neatly onto the symptom.

    What the studies say

    Most of the human work comes from Theoharides and colleagues, who developed luteolin-containing formulations and studied them in mast cell activation syndrome and autism. A small study in patients with mastocytosis reported improvement in "brain fog" symptoms with a luteolin-quercetin-rutin formulation, and open-label paediatric autism studies reported behavioural and communication gains. These were small, largely uncontrolled, used multi-ingredient products, and came predominantly from one research group with commercial involvement in the formulation — all reasons for caution rather than dismissal. Interest expanded during long-COVID research, where neuroinflammation hypotheses made luteolin a proposed candidate, but proposals and reviews are not trials, and the randomized evidence has not materialised. Bioavailability compounds the uncertainty: unformulated luteolin is poorly absorbed, so negative or weak results may reflect the delivery rather than the molecule. Verdict: insufficient evidence, with a mechanism worth watching.

    Caveats

    Human data is small, combination-based and largely from one group. Brain fog has many causes — sleep apnoea, thyroid disease, anaemia, depression, medication effects — that deserve testing before an anti-inflammatory flavone.

    Less likely to help if

    People whose fog stems from poor sleep, untreated thyroid or iron deficiency, depression, or medication side effects will not respond to a mast cell stabiliser.
