    Evidence is insufficient. HMB reduces muscle protein breakdown, and some trials report lower creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase after damaging exercise with 3 g/day, along with reduced soreness - findings mostly in untrained participants performing unaccustomed eccentric work, where damage markers are high and easy to move. In trained athletes, and for functional recovery measures such as restored strength and next-day performance, results are inconsistent or null. Reduced creatine kinase is also a biomarker rather than an outcome, and does not reliably predict how someone performs the following day. Sleep, adequate protein and carbohydrate, and sensible programming remain the recovery levers with real evidence.
