    How It Works

    Eccentric exercise produces microtrauma, local bradykinin release, increased vascular permeability and the fluid accumulation that accounts for much of the stiffness and pain in the days afterwards. Absorbed bromelain reduces bradykinin generation and has fibrinolytic activity that clears the fibrin matrix trapping oedema in damaged tissue. It also alters leukocyte surface receptors, limiting the neutrophil infiltration that amplifies secondary damage. The same actions underlie its clearer benefit after surgery, where the tissue insult is larger and more consistent.

    What the studies say

    The strongest data are surgical rather than athletic. Randomised trials in third molar extraction and other oral surgery report reduced post-operative swelling, trismus and pain with bromelain, and combination enzyme preparations have similar support in European practice. Exercise-specific studies are fewer and mixed: some report reduced soreness and faster strength recovery after eccentric protocols, others find no difference from placebo in soreness ratings or creatine kinase clearance. Sample sizes are typically under 40, dosing is inconsistent, and few studies report GDU potency, making cross-study comparison difficult. Evidence in acute soft-tissue injury such as ankle sprain sits between the two, with several older trials reporting faster resolution of swelling.

    Safety

    Caveats

    Must be taken away from food or it acts only as a digestive enzyme. Fibrinolytic activity means it should be stopped two weeks before elective surgery unless a surgeon directs otherwise, and avoided with anticoagulants. The DOMS evidence specifically is weak.

    Less likely to help if

    People taking it with meals, those using low-GDU products, and anyone expecting it to outperform adequate protein, sleep and sensible programming for routine training soreness.
