Overview
Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) is a sterile conk that grows on birch trees, harvested as a hard black mass and brewed as tea or extracted for capsules. Its composition is unusual: melanin, betulin and betulinic acid absorbed from the host birch, plus beta-glucans and triterpenes. Laboratory work shows very high ORAC values, inhibition of NF-kB, and immunomodulatory effects on macrophages, and animal models suggest anti-inflammatory and glucose-lowering activity. What is missing is human data: as of now there are no adequately powered randomised controlled trials in people for immunity, cancer, fatigue or blood sugar, so every clinical claim is extrapolation. Two practical issues matter more than the mechanistic promise. First, chaga is very high in oxalate, and case reports document oxalate nephropathy and end-stage renal failure after months of heavy daily consumption. Second, wild harvesting is depleting birch populations, and much commercial powder is mycelium grown on grain rather than true sclerotium. Reasonable use is occasional tea in people with normal kidney function, not high-dose daily powder.
