    How It Works

    Beta-glucans bind dectin-1 and complement receptor 3 on macrophages and dendritic cells, priming innate immune responses; polyphenols and melanin add antioxidant activity.

    Evidence

    What the studies say

    Laboratory work on Inonotus obliquus is extensive: polysaccharide fractions stimulate macrophage nitric-oxide and cytokine production, modulate splenocyte proliferation in mice, and show antiviral activity against several viruses in vitro. Animal models of colitis and immunosuppression show restoration of immune parameters. None of this has been tested in adequately powered human randomised trials - there are no published RCTs measuring infection rates, vaccine response or immune markers in people taking chaga. Two caveats matter. Most retail chaga is mycelium grown on grain, which contains far less beta-glucan than true sclerotium, so product identity is a live issue. And case reports of oxalate nephropathy after months of daily high-dose chaga, including a patient progressing to dialysis, mean the safety ceiling is real rather than theoretical.

    High oxalate content restricts long-term daily use, especially above 3 g/day. Product authenticity varies widely between sclerotium and grain-grown mycelium.
