Casein's value comes from a physical property rather than a nutritional one. On contact with stomach acid it forms a clot, and that clot is emptied gradually, producing a low-amplitude but prolonged rise in plasma amino acids lasting six to eight hours — the mirror image of whey, which peaks within ninety minutes and clears. This makes the comparison a matter of timing rather than superiority. Around training, whey wins: the rapid leucine spike drives a larger acute muscle protein synthesis response. Overnight, casein wins: controlled studies using pre-sleep casein at 30-40 g show increased overnight muscle protein synthesis rates and improved whole-body protein balance, with resistance training trials reporting greater gains in muscle mass and strength when pre-sleep protein is added. Over a full day, when total protein intake is adequate, the difference between the two largely disappears — total intake and distribution matter far more than which powder. Micellar casein retains the native structure and clots properly; caseinates are processed differently and digest faster, losing part of the point. Casein is also notably satiating and has a lower incidence of gastrointestinal complaints than whey concentrate in lactose-sensitive people, since micellar casein is typically low in lactose.
