    Ashwagandha for Decreased Sex Drive

Ashwagandha has some of the better supplement evidence for libido: randomised trials show modest improvements in sexual function and small rises in testosterone in stressed men, and a trial in women found improved sexual function scores. The effect appears to work through stress and cortisol reduction — which also defines who will not respond.

    Overview

Ashwagandha has some of the better supplement evidence for libido: randomised trials show modest improvements in sexual function and small rises in testosterone in stressed men, and a trial in women found improved sexual function scores. The effect appears to work through stress and cortisol reduction — which also defines who will not respond.

    Verdict

    Mixed evidence

Small positive trials in stressed populations; effects are modest and likely work via cortisol rather than directly on libido.

    How It Works

Ashwagandha withanolides lower cortisol and modulate the stress axis. Since chronic stress suppresses both testosterone and desire, reducing that suppression plausibly restores libido toward baseline rather than elevating it above it.

    Protocol

    form
Root extract standardised for withanolides (KSM-66 in most of the sexual function trials)
    timing
    With food, consistently
    duration
8-12 weeks, then reassess rather than continuing indefinitely
    titration
Move to 300 mg twice daily after two weeks
    measurement
FSFI in women or a sexual function questionnaire in men, plus testosterone in men if clinically indicated
    starting dose
300 mg standardised root extract once daily with food

    Evidence

    What the studies say

Randomised trials in men under chronic stress found 300-600 mg of standardised extract daily raised testosterone modestly and improved sexual function scores versus placebo. A separate trial in women with sexual dysfunction found improved desire and satisfaction scores over eight weeks. Trials are small, short and largely industry-funded, and no trial addresses medication-induced libido loss.

No studies are yet linked to both Ashwagandha and Decreased Sex Drive.

    Safety

    Caveats

Rare reports of liver injury — stop with jaundice or dark urine. May increase thyroid hormone levels, so use caution with thyroid conditions. Avoid in pregnancy. If an SSRI is the cause, address the medication rather than layering supplements.

    Less likely to help if

Anyone whose low libido stems from medication side effects, relationship factors or depression — ashwagandha does not touch those drivers.
