Ashwagandha for Emotional Numbness
Ashwagandha has reasonable trial evidence for stress and anxiety reduction, but emotional numbness is a different target. Where numbness stems from chronic stress or burnout, lowering the stress load may indirectly restore some emotional range. Where it stems from depression, trauma or SSRI blunting, ashwagandha does not address the mechanism — therapy, medication adjustment and behavioural activation do.
Overview
Verdict
Good stress-reduction data, but no trials target emotional numbness directly; indirect benefit at best.
How It Works
Dosing & Protocol
Typical dose
- Recommended dose
- 300-600 mg/day standardized extract (KSM-66 or equivalent)
- Expected timeframe
- 6-8 weeks if stress-driven
Protocol
- important
- Emotional numbness is commonly a feature of depression, PTSD, dissociation or SSRI side effects - all of which need proper assessment rather than a supplement
- studied dose
- 300-600 mg/day standardised root extract over 8-12 weeks in stress and anxiety trials
- evidence note
- Verdict is insufficient - no trial has measured emotional blunting, anhedonia or affective range
- what happened
- Perceived stress and cortisol fell reliably, but no study asked whether emotional range or the capacity to feel pleasure improved, so nothing can be claimed here
- if you still trial it
- Treat it as unproven for this, run 8 weeks at 300-600 mg daily and score anhedonia specifically at baseline and week 8
Evidence
What the studies say
No studies are yet linked to both Ashwagandha and Emotional Numbness.
Safety
Caveats
May cause sedation; avoid in thyroid disorders without medical supervision. Does not address depression-related anhedonia or SSRI blunting.
