    Evidence

    What the studies say

Cochrane assessment found only two of over a hundred trials methodologically adequate; both favoured 5-HTP over placebo. The overall evidence base is weak.

No studies are yet linked to both 5-HTP and Depression Symptom Reduction.

    Safety

    Caveats

Serotonin syndrome risk with antidepressants; avoid combining with SSRIs, MAOIs or triptans.

    Less likely to help if

People with moderate to severe depression, anyone already on serotonergic medication, and those whose low mood is driven by thyroid disease, anaemia or sleep apnoea rather than serotonin availability.
