Methodology
Two randomised double-blind controlled trials of willow bark extract (240 mg salicin/day) versus placebo (with diclofenac reference arm) in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Key Findings
Willow bark extract did not differ significantly from placebo on WOMAC pain in osteoarthritis or on disease activity in rheumatoid arthritis, whereas diclofenac was effective.
Conclusions
At this dose willow bark extract showed no analgesic superiority over placebo in osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis.
Limitations
Six-week duration; possibly subtherapeutic dose; modest sample sizes.
