The effects of betaine supplementation on fluid balance and heat tolerance during passive heat stress in men

Willingham BD, Renteria LI, Ragland TJ, Ormsbee MJ

    Published in Physiological Reports

    Key Findings

Seven days of betaine loading produced no significant condition-by-time interactions for plasma volume, osmolality or other fluid-balance and heat-tolerance markers during passive heat exposure.

    Conclusions

Betaine did not improve fluid balance or heat tolerance despite its osmolyte properties.

    Limitations

Only 11 recreationally active men, passive heat stress rather than exercise heat stress.

    Supplements Studied

    Betaine (TMG)
    Amino Acid

Consuming intracellular osmolytes, like betaine (BET), may attenuate symptoms of heat stress.

    Outcomes Measured

During heat exposure, significant time effects but no condition x time interactions, were found for plasma characteristics
