    Role of vitamin C and E supplementation on IL-6 in response to training

    Methodology

    Randomized placebo-controlled trial: young healthy men allocated to vitamin C and E or placebo, with 1-h cycling trials at 65% maximal power before and after 12 weeks of progressive endurance training; plasma and muscle IL-6 measured

    Key Findings

    The acute exercise-induced IL-6 response was attenuated by training in placebo but not in the vitamin group, with no clear difference between groups (group x training P = 0.13); oxidative stress markers were overall higher in the vitamin group.

    Conclusions

    Vitamin C and E supplementation shows no clear additive anti-inflammatory benefit when combined with endurance training.

    Limitations

    Very small sample (n=21), healthy young men only, mechanistic markers rather than performance outcomes.
