Westphal JR, Koch N, Vilchez-Vargas R, Vasapolli R
Published in Journal of Gastrointestinal and Liver Diseases
Methodology
PRISMA-guided systematic review and meta-analysis of trials adding Saccharomyces boulardii to H. pylori eradication regimens, searched from 1993 to October 2024.
Key Findings
Adding S. boulardii significantly raised overall eradication rates and significantly reduced diarrhea, nausea and epigastric pain; taste disturbance also fell in triple-therapy subgroups.
Conclusions
S. boulardii is a useful adjunct that modestly improves eradication and clearly improves tolerability of antibiotic therapy.
Limitations
Heterogeneous regimens and doses, several small trials, and possible publication bias in probiotic literature.
Supplements Studied
The supplementation of S. boulardii to H. pylori therapy caused a significant increase in overall eradication rates and a significant decrease in overall diarrhea, nausea, and epigastric pain rates.
