    Methodology

    Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in elite male taekwondo athletes given 2000 mg/d vitamin C plus 1400 U/d vitamin E or placebo for 4 days before simulated competitive matches, with markers of muscle damage, hemolysis and inflammation measured

    Short-term high-dose vitamin C and E supplementation attenuated muscle damage, hemolysis and systemic inflammatory responses to repeated simulated Olympic taekwondo matches.

    Conclusions

    Short-term high-dose antioxidant supplementation may blunt competition-induced muscle damage and inflammation in elite athletes.

    Limitations

    Very small sample (n=18), elite male athletes only, acute competition model, no performance or long-term adaptation outcomes.
