Effect of Combined Use of Calcium and Vitamin B6 on Premenstrual Syndrome Symptoms: a Randomized Clinical Trial
Masoumi SZ, et al.
Published in Journal of Caring Sciences
Methodology
Randomised clinical trial allocating women with diagnosed PMS to calcium, vitamin B6 or their combination for two menstrual cycles, with standardised PMS symptom questionnaires before and after.
Key Findings
In 76 women with premenstrual syndrome, combined calcium (500 mg) and vitamin B6 (40 mg) for two cycles reduced total PMS symptom scores more than either nutrient alone, with the largest effects on mood symptoms, anxiety and physical complaints.
Conclusions
Calcium combined with vitamin B6 outperformed single-nutrient use for premenstrual symptoms in this small trial, supporting a low-cost first-line option while awaiting larger confirmation.
Limitations
Small single-centre sample, self-reported symptom diaries, short two-cycle duration, limited blinding detail, and no placebo-only arm in some comparisons.
Supplements Studied
using of combination of calcium and vitamin B6 leads to better controlling of the premenstrual syndrome symptoms.
