Published in Gut Microbes
Methodology
Randomized double-blind placebo-controlled parallel trial; 76 healthy adults took 2 x 10^9 CFU/day Bacillus subtilis BS50 or placebo for 6 weeks with daily multi-symptom GI questionnaires.
Key Findings
BS50 increased the proportion of participants improving on a composite bloating, burping and flatulence score (47.4% vs 22.2%; OR 3.2, 95% CI 1.1-8.7, p = .024).
Conclusions
A spore-forming Bacillus subtilis probiotic reduced gas-related symptoms in healthy adults over 6 weeks.
Limitations
Healthy rather than symptomatic population; single strain; self-reported outcomes; industry-sponsored.
