Artichoke significantly reduced AST (p=.001) and ALT (p=.016); effects strongest in NAFLD patients (AST p=.003, ALT p<.001) and for ALT in overweight/obese subjects.
Conclusions
Artichoke supplementation elicits significant reductions in liver enzymes, especially in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
Limitations
Few trials, variable dosing, surrogate enzyme endpoints rather than histology.
