Methodology
Randomised, double-blinded crossover trial in 8 healthy men consuming placebo or 5 g or 15 g vitamin C-enriched gelatin three times daily before rope-skipping bouts, with serum amino acids, procollagen I N-terminal propeptide and engineered-ligament mechanics measured.
Key Findings
Gelatin with vitamin C dose-dependently raised circulating glycine, proline, hydroxyproline and hydroxylysine and doubled the collagen synthesis marker PINP; serum from supplemented subjects increased collagen content and mechanics of engineered ligaments.
Conclusions
Vitamin C-enriched gelatin taken an hour before loading increases collagen synthesis and may aid injury prevention and tissue repair.
Limitations
Very small sample (n = 8, men only), surrogate biomarker and ex vivo endpoints rather than clinical injury outcomes, vitamin C not isolated from gelatin.
