Methodology
Random-effects meta-analysis of 9 randomized controlled trials of artichoke extract on plasma lipids
Key Findings
Total cholesterol -17.6 mg/dL, LDL-C -14.9 mg/dL and triglycerides -9.2 mg/dL versus control; HDL-C unchanged (+1.0 mg/dL, p=0.333). Larger LDL reductions with higher baseline LDL.
Conclusions
Artichoke extract supplementation significantly reduces total cholesterol, LDL-C and triglycerides and may be synergistic with lipid-lowering therapy.
Limitations
Small individual trials, heterogeneous extract preparations and doses, mostly short duration.
