Published in Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews
Methodology
Cochrane systematic review of 41 RCTs assessing 27 non-Chinese herbal medicines, including artichoke, in functional dyspepsia; GRADE certainty assessment
Key Findings
Evidence for most single herbal medicines, including artichoke leaf extract, was low or very low certainty; only STW5 (which contains artichoke among nine herbs) showed possible symptom improvement, with very uncertain evidence.
Conclusions
Certainty of evidence for herbal medicines in functional dyspepsia is low; effects of individual herbs including artichoke remain uncertain.
Limitations
Small trials, high risk of bias, heterogeneous outcome measures.
Supplements Studied
STW5 (Iberogast) may moderately improve global symptoms of dyspepsia compared with placebo at 28 to 56 days; however, the evidence is very uncertain
The primary objective is to assess the effects of non-Chinese herbal medicines for the treatment of people with functional dyspepsia.
Outcomes Measured
We included RCTs comparing non-Chinese herbal medicines versus placebo or other treatments in people with functional dyspepsia.
