    TL;DR

    Serotonin is not a simple mood dial you can top up. Light exposure, exercise and gut health shape the system more reliably than precursor supplements — and combining serotonergic supplements with antidepressants is genuinely dangerous.

    Why It Matters

    Roughly 90% of body serotonin is produced in the gut and does not cross the blood-brain barrier, so peripheral serotonin says little about mood. Central synthesis depends on tryptophan availability, which competes with other large neutral amino acids for transport — a reason carbohydrate co-ingestion modestly increases brain tryptophan uptake. The simple "low serotonin causes depression" model has been substantially revised; the transmitter matters, but as part of a broader network. The critical safety issue is serotonin syndrome: 5-HTP, tryptophan, St John's Wort and SAM-e must not be combined with SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, triptans or tramadol without medical supervision.

    1) Get bright morning light daily — light exposure drives serotonergic activity and anchors circadian rhythm. 2) Exercise aerobically; it increases tryptophan availability and central turnover. 3) Eat adequate protein for tryptophan supply, and note that carbohydrate with a meal improves its transport into the brain. 4) Support the gut microbiome with fibre and fermented foods, given its role in tryptophan metabolism. 5) Correct vitamin D, B6, B12 and iron, all cofactors or contributors to synthesis. 6) Prioritise sleep, since deprivation alters receptor sensitivity. 7) Do not stack serotonergic supplements with serotonergic medication. 8) Seek clinical care for persistent low mood rather than self-treating with precursors.
