DHT Balance
Healthy DHT metabolism for hair and prostate wellness.
TL;DR
DHT (dihydrotestosterone) balance matters for hair loss and prostate health. Saw palmetto modestly inhibits 5-alpha-reductase; it is much weaker than finasteride but better tolerated.
Why It Matters
DHT is produced from testosterone by 5-alpha-reductase and drives androgenetic hair loss and benign prostatic hyperplasia. Saw palmetto is the best-studied natural 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor: meta-analyses show modest improvement in urinary symptoms versus placebo, far weaker than finasteride. For hair loss, evidence is thinner but positive in small trials.
How to Measure
IPSS questionnaire monthly for prostate symptoms; standardized crown/vertex photos every 3 months for hair.
Biomarkers
Optimization Protocol
Saw palmetto 320 mg/day standardized extract (liposterolic 85–95%). Allow 3–6 months. For hair: combine with minoxidil for meaningful effect — monotherapy expectations should be modest.
Lifestyle Levers
- •Weight management (adipose aromatization affects androgen balance)
- •Resistance training
- •Scalp care and gentle handling
- •Avoid anabolic steroid use (major DHT/hair driver)
Supporting Supplements
Saw Palmetto
Weaker than finasteride but meaningfully better than placebo and very well tolerated.
Zinc
Correct deficiency if present; not a DHT modulator at normal status.
Pygeum
Helpful for urinary symptoms; weak direct DHT evidence.
