    Amyloid Plaque Prevention

Protection against harmful protein aggregation in the brain associated with cognitive decline.

    TL;DR

Amyloid-beta buildup is one hallmark of Alzheimer's disease. No supplement is proven to clear plaque in humans, but omega-3s, curcumin and B-vitamins show modest signals for slowing related decline.

    Why It Matters

Amyloid-beta 42 aggregation begins one to two decades before symptoms. Anti-amyloid antibody drugs have shown plaque clearance with modest clinical benefit, which supports amyloid as a target but also shows that plaque alone does not explain cognition. Supplement evidence sits far earlier on that curve: trials measure cognitive scores or brain atrophy, not plaque clearance. Vascular health, sleep quality and glycaemic control likely matter as much as any single nutrient.

    How to Measure

Amyloid status is established by amyloid PET imaging or CSF Abeta42/40 ratio, both specialist-ordered. Plasma p-tau217 and Abeta42/40 blood tests are now clinically available in some regions and are the practical first step. Track cognition with validated batteries rather than self-report.

    Optimization Protocol

Prioritise the levers with the strongest data first: treat hypertension, correct homocysteine above 11 umol/L with B6/B12/folate, get 7-8 hours of sleep to support glymphatic clearance, and train aerobically. Layer supplements second: DHA-dominant omega-3 1-2 g/day (most useful in APOE4 non-carriers and those with low baseline intake), bioavailable curcumin 500-1000 mg/day, and vitamin D repletion to 30-50 ng/mL. Discuss any high-dose regimen with a clinician if you take anticoagulants.
