    How It Works

    Zinc is required by over 300 enzymes including collagenases and DNA polymerases, and is concentrated in healing tissue where it supports immune function, collagen synthesis and epithelialisation.

    Typical dose

    Recommended dose
    15-30 mg elemental zinc daily where deficiency is confirmed or dietary risk is high, for the duration of active healing. Topical zinc oxide is a different use with its own evidence.
    Expected timeframe
    Deficiency correction shows tissue effects within 2-4 weeks; wound closure timelines depend on the wound.

    Take with food. Evidence is mixed but mechanistically well grounded. Zinc is required for DNA synthesis, collagen formation, epithelial proliferation and immune function, and deficiency demonstrably impairs healing - so repletion in a zinc-deficient patient with a slow wound genuinely accelerates closure. Cochrane reviews of zinc for venous and arterial ulcers found no benefit in unselected patients, which is the crux: supplementing zinc-replete people does not speed healing. Adequate protein (1.2-1.5 g/kg/day), vitamin C and overall energy intake matter more than any single micronutrient.

    Evidence

    What the studies say

    Trials show improved healing rates with supplementation in zinc-deficient patients — older adults with poor intake, malnourished surgical patients, chronic wound populations with low levels. Supplementation trials in non-deficient people are consistently null. A Cochrane review of arterial and venous leg ulcers found no benefit without demonstrated deficiency.

    No studies are yet linked to both Zinc and Slow Wound Healing.

    Safety

    Caveats

    Doses above 40 mg daily cause copper deficiency — prolonged high-dose zinc without testing is a real harm. Nausea is common on an empty stomach.

    Less likely to help if

    People with adequate zinc status, who are the majority of supplement-takers, and any wound whose real barrier is diabetes control, blood supply, pressure or infection.
