    Vitex (Chasteberry) for Estrogen Balance

Vitex (chasteberry) acts mainly on prolactin and progesterone balance rather than estrogen directly; it helps PMS and cycle regularity with moderate evidence but is not an estrogen-lowering agent.

    Overview

Vitex (chasteberry) acts mainly on prolactin and progesterone balance rather than estrogen directly; it helps PMS and cycle regularity with moderate evidence but is not an estrogen-lowering agent.

    Verdict

    Mixed evidence

Effective for PMS/cycle symptoms; indirect for estrogen balance specifically.

    How It Works

Vitex binds dopamine D2 receptors in the pituitary, lowering prolactin; this supports luteal progesterone production, which balances estrogen effects functionally.

    Evidence

    What the studies say

Meta-analyses support vitex for PMS symptom reduction (strongest for mastalgia) and cycle regularity in luteal defect. It does not lower estradiol; benefits are via the progesterone side of the ratio.

No studies are yet linked to both Vitex (Chasteberry) and Estrogen Balance.

    Safety

    Caveats

Avoid with dopamine-related medications, hormonal contraception, and in pregnancy. Can take months to show full effect.

    Less likely to help if

Women with true high estradiol needing direct estrogen modulation; those on hormonal birth control.
