    What the studies say

    Deficiency (25(OH)D under 25-30 nmol/L) is an established cause of musculoskeletal pain and weakness that responds to repletion over 8-12 weeks. Observational data link low vitamin D to stress fracture risk in athletes and military recruits, with repletion recommended. Trials in vitamin-D-replete people with mechanical foot pain show no benefit.

    No studies are yet linked to both Vitamin D and Foot Pain.

    Caveats

    Do not megadose — excess vitamin D causes hypercalcaemia. Mechanical foot pain needs mechanical treatment regardless of vitamin D status.

    Less likely to help if

    People with plantar fasciitis, bunions or neuromas and normal vitamin D levels — the dominant foot-pain population.
