Valeriana officinalis root has been used for insomnia since antiquity, and it remains the herb with the largest sleep literature — which is both its strength and the source of its reputation for inconsistency. Its constituents include valerenic acid, valepotriates and a small amount of GABA itself, and the mechanism most supported is allosteric modulation of GABA-A receptors at the beta-3 subunit, combined with inhibition of GABA breakdown and reuptake and adenosine A1 receptor agonism.
Meta-analyses tell a consistent story. Subjective sleep quality improves — people report falling asleep more easily and rating their sleep better — while polysomnography and actigraphy show minimal change in sleep latency, total sleep time or architecture. That divergence is real and worth understanding rather than dismissing: reduced pre-sleep anxiety and rumination can genuinely improve the experience of sleep without shifting the objective numbers much. The effect also builds. Single-dose trials are largely negative, while two to four weeks of nightly use produce the reported benefits, which is the opposite pattern to a hypnotic drug.
Two practical quirks matter. About 10-20% of users experience paradoxical stimulation and find valerian activating rather than sedating — if that happens to you, it is a known effect, not a dosing error. And extract quality varies enormously, since valerenic acid content depends on the plant, the harvest and the extraction, which explains a good deal of the trial heterogeneity. Valerian smells strongly of old socks, is non-habit-forming, and does not produce the next-day cognitive impairment or dependence associated with benzodiazepines or Z-drugs, making it a reasonable first-line option for mild insomnia.
