    Overview

    Schisandra chinensis was formally classified as an adaptogen by Soviet researchers in the 1960s, and much of the human evidence still comes from that Russian tradition — studies of pilots, sailors and factory workers measuring reaction time and error rates under sustained load. The active constituents are dibenzocyclooctadiene lignans, principally schisandrin, schisandrin B and gomisin A, and any product worth buying states a lignan or schisandrin percentage.

    Two effects have reasonable support. The first is hepatic: schisandrin B upregulates glutathione S-transferase and heat-shock proteins in hepatocytes, and trials in chronic hepatitis have shown ALT reductions. Bicyclol, a licensed hepatoprotective drug in China, is a synthetic schisandrin analogue, which is a meaningful validation of the mechanism. The second is cognitive-under-stress: combination products such as ADAPT-232, which pairs schisandra with rhodiola and eleuthero, improved attention and reduced fatigue in controlled trials.

    The catch is pharmacokinetic. Schisandra is one of the more potent botanical inducers of CYP3A4 and also affects P-glycoprotein, so it can materially lower plasma concentrations of tacrolimus, statins, some anticonvulsants and oral contraceptives. This is not a theoretical caution — it has been documented in human pharmacokinetic studies.
