Red Clover for Menopause Symptom Relief
Red clover isoflavones show modest hot flash reduction in meta-analyses, with benefit concentrated in women having frequent daily flashes.
Overview
How It Works
Dosing & Protocol
Typical dose
- Recommended dose
- 40–80 mg/day total isoflavones, standardized extract.
- Expected timeframe
- 12 weeks
Protocol
- form
- Standardised extract providing biochanin A, formononetin, genistein and daidzein; Promensil at 40 mg isoflavones per tablet was the preparation in most trials
- duration
- 12 weeks minimum; trials ran 12 weeks to 1 year
- co factor
- Take with food. Evidence is mixed and outcome-dependent. For vasomotor symptoms, Cochrane found no consistent benefit over placebo, with some trials suggesting modest reductions at 80 mg/day. For other menopausal outcomes the picture varies: some trials report improvements in vaginal dryness, mood and sleep, others nothing, and there is limited evidence that red clover isoflavones may slow bone mineral density loss at the lumbar spine. Menopause is a cluster of distinct symptoms with different mechanisms, so a single modest phytoestrogen effect does not address all of them. Placebo response in this area is high.
- titration
- Increase to 80 mg/day if there is no response by 8 weeks
- starting dose
- 40 mg/day of standardised red clover isoflavones with a meal
Evidence
What the studies say
No studies are yet linked to both Red Clover and Menopause Symptom Relief.
Safety
