    Quercetin for Sinus Relief

Quercetin has plausible mast cell effects for allergic sinus symptoms and weak clinical data.

    Overview

Quercetin has plausible mast cell effects for allergic sinus symptoms and weak clinical data.

    Verdict

    Insufficient evidence

    How It Works

Stabilises mast cells to reduce histamine release driving mucosal swelling.

    Dosing & Protocol

    Typical dose

    Recommended dose
500mg twice daily, phytosome or with bromelain
    Expected timeframe
    4-8 weeks

    Protocol

    form
Bioavailability-enhanced quercetin, since plain aglycone absorption is poor
    duration
Allergic rhinitis trials ran 4-8 weeks
    co factor
Evidence is insufficient. Quercetin has documented mast cell stabilising and anti-inflammatory activity in vitro, and small trials in allergic rhinitis and Japanese cedar pollinosis report modest reductions in nasal and ocular symptoms - which is the closest relevant evidence. But no randomised trial has examined acute or chronic rhinosinusitis, sinus pressure, facial pain or mucosal inflammation of the sinuses as an outcome. Allergic rhinitis and sinusitis are distinct conditions with different pathology, and extending rhinitis findings to sinus disease is not supported.
    titration
    Not applicable - no sinus-specific dose-response exists
    starting dose
Not established for sinus symptoms. Allergic rhinitis trials used 500-1,000 mg/day in divided doses with food

    Evidence

    What the studies say

In vitro and animal work supports mast cell stabilisation. Human allergic rhinitis trials are small and use varied preparations, with poor bioavailability of standard forms.

No studies are yet linked to both Quercetin and Sinus Relief.

    Safety

    Caveats

Poorly absorbed unless formulated. Interacts with ciclosporin and some antibiotics.

    Less likely to help if

Everyone - no sinus-specific evidence exists, and chronic sinusitis needs proper treatment.
