    Dietary fibre and plant variety are the operative intervention here. Evidence is limited for this specific outcome. Microbial diversity is associated with health in observational data, and low diversity accompanies obesity, inflammatory bowel disease and antibiotic exposure - but probiotics do not reliably increase it. Trials measuring alpha diversity after probiotic supplementation generally show no significant increase; the supplemented organisms appear in stool while being taken and disappear afterwards. What does increase diversity in controlled studies is dietary change: increased fibre, greater plant variety, and fermented foods, which in a Stanford randomised trial increased microbiota diversity while a high-fibre arm did not, over 10 weeks.

    Evidence

    What the studies say

    RCT evidence is strongest for specific indications (antibiotic-associated diarrhea, IBS) rather than diversity per se. Sequencing studies show most strains disappear within 1–3 weeks of stopping; a notable Israeli study found probiotics can even delay native recovery after antibiotics in some individuals.
