    How It Works

    Strains with high beta-galactosidase activity digest lactose within the gut lumen, and regular exposure shifts colonic fermentation toward less gas-producing pathways. This is also why live yoghurt is tolerated far better than milk.

    What the studies say

    Randomised trials show reduced breath hydrogen and symptom scores with yoghurt-derived Lactobacillus delbrueckii and Streptococcus thermophilus, and with some Bifidobacterium products. Effects are heterogeneous, strain-specific and generally smaller than lactase enzyme replacement, which has consistent positive trial data.

    Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis Bi-07 supports lactose digestion in vitro and in randomized, placebo- and lactase-controlled clinical trials

    Safety

    Caveats

    Benefits stop when intake stops. Effect sizes vary widely between strains — yoghurt bacteria have the most consistent data. Not a licence to ignore your personal lactose threshold.

    Less likely to help if

    People who respond fully to lactase tablets or dietary adjustment gain little extra, and those with severe sensitivity may notice no meaningful change.
