Meta-analyses show probiotics reduce whole gut transit time by roughly 12 hours on average and increase stool frequency by around one movement per week, with Bifidobacterium lactis strains showing the most consistent effect. Findings vary widely by strain, product and population, and some trials show nothing. Proposed mechanisms include short-chain fatty acid production altering colonic motility, changes in luminal pH, bile salt metabolism and effects on enteric nervous system signalling. Transit time itself is a research measure rather than something patients experience directly.
