    Probiotics for Food Sensitivities

Specific probiotic strains reduce bloating and abdominal pain in IBS-type food reactions, but effects are strain-specific and modest.

    Overview

Specific probiotic strains reduce bloating and abdominal pain in IBS-type food reactions, but effects are strain-specific and modest.

    Verdict

    Mixed evidence

Worth a time-limited trial of a studied strain; not a fix for a genuine allergy or coeliac disease.

    How It Works

Certain strains modulate gut barrier function, reduce gas-producing fermentation, and dampen visceral hypersensitivity via gut-brain signalling.

    Evidence

    What the studies say

Meta-analyses in IBS show a small overall benefit for global symptoms and bloating, but heterogeneity between strains is large enough that pooled results mislead. Bifidobacterium infantis 35624 and multi-strain preparations have the most consistent data; many marketed products have none. Trials run 4-8 weeks and effects fade after stopping. Nothing in the literature supports probiotics for IgE food allergy, and they do not permit gluten reintroduction in coeliac disease.

No studies are yet linked to both Probiotics and Food Sensitivities.

    Safety

    Caveats

Avoid in severe immunosuppression or with central venous access. Transient increased gas in the first week is common.

    Less likely to help if

People with coeliac disease or true IgE allergy.
