    Probiotics for Food Allergies

    Probiotics have a genuine but narrow role in food allergy: meta-analyses suggest specific strains (notably L. rhamnosus GG) modestly reduce eczema and possibly food sensitisation when given to high-risk infants, and may accelerate tolerance acquisition in cow milk allergy. For established food allergy in older children and adults, there is no treatment effect — avoidance, adrenaline planning and specialist immunotherapy remain the management.

    What the studies say

    Meta-analyses of RCTs show probiotics reduce infant eczema risk modestly, with weaker and inconsistent effects on food sensitisation itself. Trials adding L. rhamnosus GG to extensively hydrolysed formula showed faster tolerance acquisition in cow milk allergic infants. Effects are strain-specific and cannot be generalised across products. No adult treatment data exists.

    Effects are strain-specific — generic products cannot claim the trial data. Never substitute probiotics for avoidance or adrenaline in established allergy.
