    How It Works

MSM supplies bioavailable sulfur and appears to downregulate NF-kB-driven inflammatory cytokines and reduce oxidative stress in joint tissue.

    Dosing & Protocol

    Typical dose

    Recommended dose
1.5-3 g MSM daily, in one or two divided doses with food
    Expected timeframe
    8-12 weeks

    Protocol

    form
    Methylsulfonylmethane powder or capsules
    duration
    12 weeks before judging
    co factor
Take with food to limit nausea and bloating. Evidence is mixed: trials show small improvements in pain and physical function in knee osteoarthritis, generally smaller than NSAIDs.
    titration
Increase to 3 g daily (split morning and evening) after one week if tolerated; some knee osteoarthritis trials used up to 6 g
    starting dose
    1.5 g daily with a meal

    Evidence

    What the studies say

Randomised trials of 3-6 g/day in knee osteoarthritis report modest WOMAC pain and function improvements versus placebo over 12 weeks. Samples are small and long-term data absent.

    Safety

    Caveats

Effect sizes are small and trials are short - MSM does not modify joint structure. Common side effects are bloating, nausea and loose stools. Safety ceiling: doses above 6 g/day have not been evaluated for long-term use. Data in pregnancy and breastfeeding are absent, so avoid. Joint pain with swelling, heat or fever needs medical assessment for inflammatory arthritis.

    Less likely to help if

People with inflammatory arthritis, advanced structural joint damage, or pain that is neuropathic in origin.
