Melatonin for Deep Sleep Enhancement
Melatonin helps sleep onset and circadian alignment, but its effect on deep (slow-wave) sleep specifically is small and inconsistent.
Overview
Verdict
Best for onset and circadian timing; not a deep-sleep enhancer per se.
How It Works
Dosing & Protocol
Typical dose
- Recommended dose
- 0.5–3 mg, timed to bedtime
- Expected timeframe
- First night for onset; 1–2 weeks for circadian effects.
Protocol

- 0.5–1 mg (start low)
- notes
- Higher doses are not more effective and may cause grogginess.

What the studies say
Meta-analysis: melatonin for the treatment of primary sleep disorders
Ferracioli-Oda E, et al.
This meta-analysis demonstrates that melatonin decreases sleep onset latency, increases total sleep time and improves overall sleep quality.
Safety
Caveats
Timing matters more than dose. Chronic high doses are poorly studied. Not for deep-sleep goals specifically.
