    How It Works

    Thyroid hormones T4 and T3 are built directly from iodine, so restoring iodine reverses deficiency-driven hypothyroidism. But most hypothyroidism in iodine-sufficient countries is autoimmune (Hashimoto's), where excess iodine can worsen antibody activity and trigger dysfunction. Kelp products tested commercially have ranged from under 100 mcg to over 5,000 mcg iodine per serving.

    What the studies say

    There are no randomized trials of kelp itself for hypothyroidism — only the well-established physiology of iodine repletion and a literature of case reports describing kelp-induced thyroid dysfunction, including both hyper- and hypothyroidism after chronic high-iodine kelp use. Analyses of kelp supplements repeatedly find extreme iodine variability and occasional arsenic contamination. For documented iodine deficiency, a measured-dose potassium iodide supplement under clinician guidance is the safer and more predictable route.

    Iodine content varied enormously between products, and a single serving of some kelp products exceeded the tolerable upper intake level many times over.

    Caveats

    Kelp is the classic way people overshoot the 1100 mcg daily adult upper limit for iodine, and dose per tablet is unpredictable. Excess iodine can both induce hypothyroidism (Wolff-Chaikoff) and trigger thyrotoxicosis (Jod-Basedow), with Hashimoto's and nodular goitre raising the risk. Kelp also concentrates arsenic and heavy metals. Interacts with levothyroxine, lithium, amiodarone and antithyroid drugs. In pregnancy stay at 250 mcg iodine daily from a controlled source.

    Less likely to help if

    Anyone with autoimmune hypothyroidism in an iodine-sufficient diet — the great majority — where levothyroxine is the treatment and kelp may worsen thyroid function.
