    Overview

    Kelp refers to large brown seaweeds (Laminaria, Saccharina, Ascophyllum) sold as iodine supplements. Iodine is genuinely essential — it is the raw material for thyroid hormones T4 and T3 — and deficiency remains common in regions without iodized salt. The problem is dosing: kelp iodine content varies wildly by species, harvest location, and processing, and analyses of commercial products have found servings delivering anywhere from under 100 mcg to over 5,000 mcg, far above the 1,100 mcg/day tolerable upper limit. Chronic excess iodine can paradoxically cause hypothyroidism (Wolff-Chaikoff effect), trigger hyperthyroidism in nodular goiters, and exacerbate autoimmune thyroid disease. Brown seaweeds also bioaccumulate arsenic; some kelp products have exceeded safe inorganic arsenic limits. If iodine is needed, a potassium iodide supplement with a verified dose (e.g., 150 mcg) is a far safer vehicle than kelp.
