How It Works
Dosing & Protocol
Typical dose
- Recommended dose
- 120-240 mg oral hyaluronic acid daily, taken as a single dose with food
- Expected timeframe
- 6 weeks for early changes in skin hydration measures; 12 weeks for the full effect reported in trials.
Protocol
- form
- Low-molecular-weight oral hyaluronic acid for absorption; a topical humectant serum applied to damp skin works by a different and more direct route
- duration
- 6-12 weeks, matching trial length
- co factor
- Take with food. Pair with a topical ceramide or occlusive moisturiser and short lukewarm showers — barrier care outperforms any oral agent for dry skin
- titration
- Increase to 240 mg daily if there is no change at 6 weeks; trials used 120-240 mg daily and molecular weights from 300 Da to 800 kDa with broadly similar results
- starting dose
- 120 mg oral hyaluronic acid daily with a meal

Safety
Caveats
Evidence is mixed: trials are small, short and frequently manufacturer-funded, with modest hydration changes. Oral hyaluronic acid is well tolerated and safety data in pregnancy are limited, so topical care is preferable then. Dry skin with itch that disturbs sleep, or of sudden onset, warrants review for eczema, hypothyroidism or medication effects.
