    How It Works

    HMB, a leucine metabolite, attenuates proteolysis via the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway and may stabilise the sarcolemma after eccentric damage.

    Trials report reduced creatine kinase and LDH after damaging exercise, particularly in untrained participants, but subjective soreness ratings often show no significant difference.

    Safety

    Caveats

    Evidence is mixed: benefit appears mainly in untrained people and during aggressive new training loads, while trials in resistance-trained athletes are largely null. Well tolerated at 3 g daily; long-term safety data beyond a year are limited and it is not advised in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Creatine has stronger evidence for performance if you are choosing one.

    Less likely to help if

    Trained lifters already eating adequate protein, and anyone whose soreness comes from underrecovery, poor sleep or excessive weekly load rather than the training stimulus itself.
