Set against that, GABA crosses the blood-brain barrier poorly, so a direct central anxiolytic effect is improbable and gut-brain signalling is the more plausible route. The trials are small, short, largely manufacturer-funded and not consistently replicated, and none tested clinical anxiety.

    What the studies say

    A 2020 systematic review of 14 studies found modest, consistent reductions in acute stress markers such as salivary chromogranin A and cortisol, alongside EEG shifts toward alpha dominance within an hour of 100-200 mg. Yoto and colleagues showed this in 30 adults under an arithmetic stress task. The trials are small, frequently manufacturer-funded and rely on proxy endpoints, and none establishes central receptor activity — so the honest reading is a real but minor peripheral calming effect rather than an anxiolytic.

    Safety

    Caveats

    Persistent anxiety, panic attacks or stress that impairs work and relationships needs proper assessment - CBT and prescribed treatment have far stronger evidence than any supplement, and thyroid disease, anaemia and stimulant or alcohol use can present as anxiety. Safety: no established upper intake level and no long-term data. Avoid combining with benzodiazepines, z-drugs, gabapentin, pregabalin, baclofen, alcohol or other sedatives because of potential additive sedation, and never stop prescribed benzodiazepines abruptly to substitute GABA - withdrawal seizures are a real risk. GABA may lower blood pressure, relevant on antihypertensives. Tingling and transient breathlessness are reported at higher doses. Avoid in pregnancy, breastfeeding and childhood, where safety data do not exist. Do not drive until you know how it affects you.

    People whose stress is driven by circumstances or an untreated anxiety disorder, where a supplement changes nothing.
