    Curcumin inhibits NF-kB signalling and reduces microglial production of IL-1beta, TNF-alpha and IL-6, while also chelating metals and scavenging reactive oxygen species.

    Evidence

    What the studies say

    Meta-analyses confirm curcumin lowers circulating CRP, IL-6 and TNF-alpha across a range of conditions. Central effects are less certain because curcumin crosses the blood-brain barrier poorly even with bioavailability enhancement. An 18-month randomised trial of a lipidated formulation in non-demented older adults reported memory improvement and reduced amyloid and tau PET signal, but the trial enrolled around 40 people and awaits replication.

    Safety

    Caveats

    Mixed, preliminary evidence. Increases bleeding risk with warfarin, DOACs and antiplatelets; stop 2 weeks before surgery. Can trigger pain in gallstone disease. Rare idiosyncratic liver injury reported. Avoid therapeutic doses in pregnancy.
