CoQ10 for Fibromyalgia
CoQ10 has more direct fibromyalgia data than most supplements, but nearly all of it comes from one group with small samples. Promising, not established.
Overview
Verdict
Several small randomised trials from a single research group report reduced pain and fatigue with 300 mg of CoQ10 daily, but replication is limited.
How It Works
Dosing & Protocol
Typical dose
- Recommended dose
- 300 mg daily, divided into three doses
- Expected timeframe
- 6 to 12 weeks

- notes
- Take with meals containing fat. Ubiquinol is better absorbed but more expensive; ubiquinone was used in the trials.
- dosage
- 300 mg daily in three divided doses of 100 mg
- duration
- Trial 8 to 12 weeks with a symptom diary
Evidence
What the studies say
Can coenzyme Q10 improve clinical and molecular parameters in fibromyalgia?
Cordero MD
These results lead to the hypothesis that CoQ10 have a potential therapeutic effect in FM, and indicate new potential molecular targets for the therapy of this disease.
Effectiveness of Coenzyme Q10 Supplementation for Reducing Fatigue: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials
Tsai IC, Hsu CW, Chang CH
As compared with the placebo groups evaluated in each RCT, the CoQ10 group showed a statistically significant reduction in fatigue scores (Hedges g = -0.398, 95% confidence interval = -0.641 to -0.155, p = 0.001).
Safety
Caveats
Evidence concentrated in one research group with small samples. CoQ10 can reduce warfarin effect and may modestly lower blood pressure. The cost of 300 mg daily is not trivial for an unconfirmed benefit.
