    How It Works

    Carnosine acts as a sacrificial nucleophile, reacting with methylglyoxal and other dicarbonyls so they modify carnosine rather than long-lived proteins such as collagen and crystallin.

    What the studies say

    Animal and in vitro work consistently shows reduced AGE cross-linking with carnosine. Human trials are limited to small studies in diabetes and metabolic syndrome showing improved glycaemic markers; skin autofluorescence and tissue AGE endpoints remain largely unstudied.

    Safety

    Caveats

    Rapidly degraded by serum carnosinase, which limits systemic exposure. Beta-alanine raises muscle carnosine but not necessarily circulating levels.

    Less likely to help if

    People with normal blood glucose, since glycation tracks average glucose - and anyone expecting a measurable personal endpoint, as HbA1c is the only practical one.
