    Verdict

    Mixed evidence

    How It Works

Boswellic acids inhibit 5-lipoxygenase, blocking leukotriene synthesis — a distinct inflammatory pathway from the COX route NSAIDs target.

    Dosing & Protocol

    Typical dose

    Recommended dose
100-250mg/day standardised to AKBA, or 300-400mg extract three times daily
    Expected timeframe
    4-8 weeks

Standardised extract with declared AKBA content
    timing
    With a fat-containing meal
    duration
    4-8 weeks to judge
    titration
Start at the lower end for two weeks, then increase if needed
    scope note
The evidence is specifically osteoarthritis pain - boswellia has not been shown to help neuropathic, headache, back or general pain
    measurement
A daily 0-10 pain score, averaged weekly
    starting dose
100-250 mg/day of a high-AKBA standardised extract, or 300-400 mg three times daily of a conventional extract

    Evidence

    What the studies say

Several small RCTs of standardised extracts report meaningful WOMAC pain improvements within 4-8 weeks. Trials are short, small, and mostly manufacturer-funded, so confidence is limited.

No studies are yet linked to both Boswellia and Pain Relief.

    Safety

    Caveats

Mild GI upset. Extract standardisation varies widely; unstandardised resin products are unreliable.

    Less likely to help if

People with neuropathic or non-inflammatory pain, and anyone using an unstandardised product with unknown AKBA content.
